About Fort Largs
From Historic Coastal Fortress to Vibrant Seaside Precinct
A Coastal Icon, Reimagined
Perched on the stunning coastline of Adelaide, Fort Largs is a place where history meets community—where weathered red-brick walls whisper stories of the past, and open courtyards buzz with the energy of today.
Built in 1885, Fort Largs was originally designed as a coastal defence post, protecting South Australia’s shores with its commanding views and artillery. Over time, it evolved into a key training site for the Women’s Royal Australian Army Corps and later, the South Australian Police Academy. For generations, this site stood proudly as a symbol of service, discipline, and strength.
After the Police Academy relocated in 2012, the fort was left vacant—its future uncertain. For years it sat behind locked gates, slowly falling into disrepair. But the story didn’t end there.
In recent years, Fort Largs has been thoughtfully restored and revitalised—reimagined not as a relic of the past, but as a destination for the future. The Fort Largs Eatery & Marketplace was born from a desire to preserve heritage while creating a welcoming coastal hub for locals and visitors alike.
Today, the precinct is alive with flavour, creativity, and community spirit. Visitors can enjoy a diverse selection of food and drinks, from fresh seafood and woodfired pizza to artisan coffee and sweets. The open-air courtyard is perfect for lazy afternoons, while weekend markets showcase the best of South Australian makers and growers. And with regular live music, family-friendly events, and private functions, there’s always something to discover.
Whether you’re here for a meal, a market, or just a moment of seaside calm—Fort Largs invites you to slow down, explore, and connect in a place that honours its past while embracing its future.
